When It Is Your Turn To Pray Out Loud

This message is for to pray out loud in a circle of people when every word you had disappears the moment it comes round to you

There are eleven chairs and she is in the fourth one, going clockwise, and the praying started at chair one.

So she has time. That is the trouble.

Chair two is praying about the week and she is not listening to a word of it, because she is drafting. She has an opening. Father, thank You that You are here with us tonight. It is fine. It is a bit tight, a bit like something read off a card, so she tries another one. Lord, we just come before You. She takes out the just. She puts the just back in because without it the sentence sounds bare.

Chair three is praying and she has moved on to the ending, because the ending is the part where people know you have finished, and if you get it wrong there is a silence and then two people start at once.

Then chair three says amen and the whole room breathes out, and it is her.

And there is nothing there. Not a nervous version of the sentence. Nothing. The drafts have gone the way a name goes when somebody asks you for it, and she can hear the radiator and somebody's shoe on the floor and the specific quality of eleven people waiting kindly.

She says amen.

Just that. In a small voice, into the carpet, and the circle moves gratefully on to chair five, who is good at this.

She is in the car eight minutes later and she is not crying, she is angry, which is worse, and the sentence going round is: I have been a Christian for nineteen years and I could not say one sentence to God in front of my own friends.

That was Tuesday. It is Thursday now and it is still going round.

When It Is Your Turn To Pray Out Loud

They asked Him for help with this exact thing

I want you to see what they asked for, because they asked for the same help you needed in chair four, and what He handed them settles the whole argument you have been having in the car. It is written down in one line, and the Holy Spirit who moved on that room is the one moving on yours.

They had watched Him pray. They had watched Him do it in a way that made them want it, and when He finished, one of them said this.

Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.Luke 11:1

Now hear the answer, and hear what the answer is not.

He did not say, be more spontaneous. He did not say, wait for it to rise up naturally. He did not give them a method, or a posture, or a breathing exercise, or a warm up.

He gave them words. A text. Our Father, which art in heaven. Say this.

And they said it. Out loud, in rooms with other people in them, for the rest of their lives, and their children said it, and the church has said it in every century since, in fields and kitchens and prisons and hospital corridors, and not one line of the New Testament ever suggests that the ones saying a given text were the slower disciples.

So take this in while it is standing right in front of you. You are not behind the others in that circle, and the written word is what settles it, not my encouragement. The Son of God answered a request for help with praying by handing over a script, and the same Holy Spirit who moved on that room is the one moving on chair four, so needing words is the position the disciples were in when they asked, and He did not think less of one of them.

Now, let us look at what actually happened on Tuesday, because you have been prosecuting it and the charge is wrong.

You did not fail to pray. You failed to perform, in front of a room, with a rhetorical form you were never taught and were expected to have absorbed. Those are different things, only one of them is anywhere in the written word, and the Holy Spirit was praying in you through every second of the one that is not.

There is a whole shelf of the church's history built by people who understood that. They put the prayers into plain language so that a man behind a plow could say them, and they printed them so that a room of people who had never met could open their mouths at the same moment. That was not a lowering of anything. It was a rope thrown to ordinary people on purpose, and you have been refusing to take hold of it because taking hold of it feels like admitting you cannot swim.

You cannot swim. Nobody in that circle can swim. Some of them have simply been in the water longer and have learned a stroke that looks like swimming.

Hear this, and let it settle where the anger has been sitting. You have the Spirit of the living God inside you, and the written word says He Himself intercedes when we do not know what to pray, so the silence in chair four was never an empty room. It was the one place in that circle where the praying was entirely His and not at all a performance. That is not the consolation prize. That is the thing the other ten were reaching for.

And one more, because it is the piece that will actually change Tuesday.

There is no rule anywhere in Scripture that says a prayer prayed out loud must be composed on the spot. Not one. That rule was invented by a culture, not by the Book, and it has been quietly disqualifying tender people for a hundred years. The Spirit who wrote every word of the written prayers in the Psalms is not embarrassed by a person reading one. He wrote them to be read.

The breakthrough

So on Tuesday, when it comes round, you are going to have something in your mouth already.

Not because you have given up on your own words. Because the Lord Jesus Christ, asked directly for help with praying, handed over a text, and you are going to take what He handed over instead of standing in an empty room trying to manufacture a better one. Scripture records the handing over, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it up when you say it.

If the circle comes to you and there is nothing there, say the prayer He taught. Out loud. All of it, or the first line of it, in your own ordinary voice.

Nobody in that room will think you have cheated. The ones who have been in the water longest will know exactly what you have done, and half of them will wish they had thought of it. You are holding what the written word put in your hand, and the Spirit of God is the one making it live in that circle.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up, before you get in the car. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit Himself intercedes in you according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of how well you speak. Whether Tuesday goes easily or goes exactly as it went last week, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of who prays best in that room.

  1. Circle of chairs, you are not a stage and you do not get to audition me. The Word of God says they asked Him to teach them to pray and He handed them a text to say, so having words ready is what the first disciples were given, and I am holding what He handed over.
  2. Shame that says nineteen years should have made me fluent by now, get out, in the name of Jesus. Scripture never once ranked the ones who said a given prayer below the ones who improvised, and the Spirit was praying in chair four while the room heard nothing.
  3. Lord, You are the one who answered that request with words, and Your Spirit is interceding in me right now under every syllable. I am saying the prayer You taught, out loud, on Tuesday and tonight, and I am done drafting in other people's turns.
