Space To DisagreeRomans 14:4

I Found Out Where She Stands

This message is for to stay in a friendship after finding out, by accident, that a friend of eleven years holds the opposite view to yours on something you care about

It was not even addressed to her. That is the thing she keeps coming back to.

It was a comment, four lines down, under something else, on a Tuesday evening, and she was not looking for it and would never have gone looking for it, and she read it twice before she registered whose name was on it.

Eleven years. This is a woman who sat on the floor of her flat the week everything went wrong and did not say anything useful and did not leave.

And there, in four lines, is a view she did not know was in her, on a thing that matters to her a great deal, stated plainly and without any cruelty at all, which is somehow worse than if it had been cruel.

She has read it nine times. She knows it is nine because she has been keeping a slightly appalled count.

And here is what has actually been happening since Tuesday, which is the part she has not admitted to herself in words.

She has been going backwards through eleven years, re reading things. A remark in a car in 2019. Something about a nephew. A silence at a dinner that she took, at the time, for tiredness.

She is doing a review. She is auditing a friend, retrospectively, on the strength of four lines under something else, and she has now found three or four moments that fit the new theory, and each one has made the theory feel more established.

The message she is drafting is very calm. She has been drafting it since Wednesday. It says that she loves her and that she just wants to understand.

It is not true that she just wants to understand.

I Found Out Where She Stands

Who art thou that judgest another's servant

Sit down before you send that. There is a question in Romans that is aimed exactly at this Tuesday, and it is a question rather than a statement on purpose.

Paul is writing to a church where people were genuinely divided about real things and were sorting each other into the sound and the unsound. Then he says this.

Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? To his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.Romans 14:4

To his own master he standeth or falleth.

The picture is a household. Your friend is not your servant. She has an employer, and He is not you, and the assessment of her belongs to Him and is already in hand.

And notice the last clause, which almost nobody quotes. He shall be holden up. God is able to make him stand. The verse does not just tell you it is not your job; it tells you the job is being done, competently, by somebody who is able.

Hear this on your own sofa, phone face down. You are not responsible for the state of her, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture puts her before her own Master and says God is able to hold her up, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in that woman for eleven years including the parts of her you have only just discovered.

Now let me name what the audit is doing, because it is the actual damage and it is happening quietly.

You are not weighing one sentence. You are re reading a decade through it, and nothing written in Scripture asked you to, and the Holy Spirit is not the one running the review. That is what the mind does with a new piece of information: it goes back and re files everything, and the re filing feels like discovery when it is really just sorting.

Three moments now fit the theory. Of course they do. Eleven years contains a great many moments and you can build a case out of any decade if you have decided what you are looking for.

Hear this too. You are not being disloyal to what you believe by staying, and Scripture is what says so. What is written keeps people with real disagreements in one household without asking either side to fold, and the Spirit of God has never made agreement the door.

And now the message you have been drafting since Wednesday.

It is a good message. It is calm and warm and it says all the right things, and it is a trial. You know it is a trial. She will know within two lines that it is a trial, because a woman who sat on your floor for a week knows your handwriting.

I am not going to tell you never to talk to her about it. Nothing in the written word forbids it and the Holy Spirit may well open it. But not this week, and not as the first thing, and not while you are still counting reads.

Because if the first contact after Tuesday is about Tuesday, then Tuesday has become what the friendship is about, and four lines under something else will have quietly taken the place of eleven years.

The breakthrough

So today, you do not send the calm message.

You send a different one, and it is about nothing at all: a photograph of something stupid, the thing about her sister, a question about the weekend.

And you say nothing about Tuesday.

That is not avoidance and it is not cowardice. It is a deliberate act, and it says the only thing that needs saying this week: you are still my friend, and one sentence has not reorganized eleven years.

The written word puts her before her own Master, and says God is able to make her stand, and the Holy Spirit has been holding her up since long before Tuesday and did not stop at four lines under something else.

Stop counting the reads. Delete the draft. Send the ordinary thing.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the draft deleted and the phone in your hand. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in her for eleven years according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of what she believes. Whether this ever gets talked about or never comes up again, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of how well you handled a Tuesday.

  1. One sentence on a screen, you are not eleven years and you do not get to re read them. The Word of God asks who art thou that judgest another man's servant, and says God is able to make her stand, so the assessment of her is in hand and it is not in mine.
  2. Audit that has been going backwards through a decade since Tuesday, get out of my house, in the name of Jesus. Scripture keeps people with real disagreements in one household without asking either of them to fold, and the Spirit of God never made agreement the door.
  3. Lord, You are the Master she stands or falls to, and Your Spirit has been holding her up since long before I read four lines. I am deleting the draft and sending her something about nothing, and I am not counting the reads any more.
