The Room I Walked Out Of

Fourteen months ago he stood up in the middle of a sentence somebody else was saying and walked out.

He remembers the physical part of it better than the words. The scrape of the chair. The specific effort of not slamming a door that was on a closer and would not slam anyway. The car park in the rain. He sat in the car for six or seven minutes and then drove home and did not tell his wife properly for two days.

The argument itself he could reconstruct if he had to. He would rather not, because at least a third of what he said was accurate and about a third of it was true but should not have been said out loud in that room, and the last third was aimed.

Nobody chased him. That has been its own quiet weight. Two people messaged in the first fortnight and he answered both of them warmly and vaguely, and after that it went quiet, and he has come to understand that people generally assume somebody else is dealing with it.

He has a whole life now that routes around one building.

He goes to a different shop. He drives a longer way to his mother's. He has an entirely reasonable answer ready for when anybody asks, and it is about time and pressure at work, and it has never once been challenged.

In August he found himself at a wedding two rows behind a man who was in that room, and they were perfectly civil at the reception, and afterwards, in the car, he shook for about a mile.

He is not angry any more. That is the strange part. The anger went out of it maybe eight months ago and what is left is not anger, it is a fourteen month old arrangement that has hardened into the shape of his week.

Leave it there and go. That is the whole instruction.

Pull the car over, because there is an instruction from Jesus about this and the thing to notice is how little of it is about the conversation.

He is talking about a man in the middle of the most important religious act available to him, at the altar, with the gift in his hands, and He says this.

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.Matthew 5:24

Leave it there. Go.

Not resolve. Not prepare. Not have the argument again with better material. The verb He gives you is a movement of the body, and He gives it to a man in the middle of something he would rather finish first.

And notice who is being sent. The one who remembered that somebody has a thing against him, which is you, in a car, on a Tuesday, fourteen months later.

Hear this with the engine off. You are not too late, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture sends the one who remembers, without any qualification about how long the remembering has taken, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept this in front of you for fourteen months, which is not an accusation. It is an invitation with unusual stamina.

Now let me name what the routing has done, because it is more expensive than you think and you have stopped seeing the bill.

An arrangement made in six minutes in a rainy car park is now running your Tuesdays, your route to your mother's, which shop you use, and a prepared sentence you have deployed eleven times. That is a lot of a life to hand to one afternoon, and nothing in the written word ever asked you to hand it over, and the Holy Spirit has been quietly refusing to let the arrangement settle.

And here is the thing about the third of what you said that was aimed: you already know about it. You have known about it since about the following Thursday. You are not a man in denial, you are a man in an arrangement, and those need completely different things.

Hear this too. You are not disqualified by what you said, and Scripture is what says so. What is written sends a man from the altar rather than barring him from it, and the Spirit of God does not stand at the door of a building you used to belong in, and there is no version of this where He is on the other side of it waiting to see what you do.

And now the part that will actually free you, and it is very small.

The instruction is not to fix it. Read it again. Go, be reconciled, and there is not one word in it about the outcome, or the script, or what he says back, or whether the room comes round.

You do not need a plan for the conversation. You have been waiting fourteen months for a plan for the conversation, and there is not going to be one, because the thing the written word asks of you is a movement and not a speech, and the Holy Spirit handles what happens after the door.

Go into the building. That is the whole of it.
