Sunday Lunch With The Argument Still On

This message is for to keep eating with a grown child who has come to a completely different conclusion about faith, without the meal becoming the argument every time

One o'clock, most Sundays, since the boy moved back to the city.

He is not a boy. He is twenty nine and he does something with logistics that his father can describe to other people in about a sentence and a half.

The meal is good. That is not the issue and never has been. His wife does the potatoes the way the lad has liked since he was eight, and there is always too much of everything, and he takes a container back with him on the train.

Somewhere between twenty and thirty minutes in, it arrives.

Not an argument, exactly. A pressure. It comes from him, and he knows it comes from him, and he has watched himself do it four Sundays running: a question that is not really a question, a small correction, a remark about somebody at the church that is designed to be a door.

And the lad handles it well, which is somehow the worst part. He is not rude. He is twenty nine and he is kind and he says something mild and moves it along, and at about the same moment his hand goes to his phone on the table, face down, and turns it over about an inch and puts it back.

That is the tell. His father has noticed it now and cannot stop noticing it.

He has three good arguments. He has had them for about three years. Two of them he has used, one of them twice, and he keeps the third for a day when the moment is right, and the moment has never once been right.

Last Sunday, after the train had gone, he sat in the kitchen with the plates still out and thought a thing he has not said to his wife.

I am running out of Sundays.

Sunday Lunch With The Argument Still On

Beareth, endureth. Both of those are about time.

Sit down at that table with me, with the plates still out, because there is a verse everybody has heard at weddings and almost nobody reads as being about a man in a kitchen.

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.1 Corinthians 13:7

Look at the first and the last one, because they are both words about time.

Beareth is carrying. Endureth is staying under a weight that has not lifted yet. Neither of them describes an outcome, and neither of them can be done quickly, and both of them assume a situation that goes on longer than anybody would like.

That is the shape of love in a real family, and Paul puts it in a list of things love does rather than things love achieves.

Hear this at your own table. You are not failing him, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture describes love as bearing and enduring rather than persuading, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the work in a man of twenty nine, and He has never once handed a father the job of doing it over a roast.

Now let me name the pressure, because you have already spotted it and you deserve to be told what it actually is.

It is grief. Not manipulation, not pride, and not a bad man being clumsy. It is a father grieving something in the presence of the person he is grieving about, and grief in a room always comes out as pressure, every time, in every family.

You are not trying to win. You are trying to stop losing something, and those feel identical from the inside and completely different from the other side of the table.

Hear this too. You have not driven him away, and Scripture is what says so. What is written puts the whole outcome in the hands of God, and the Spirit of God has been at work in that young man in ways neither of you can see, and a phone turned over an inch is not a verdict on twenty nine years of a father.

And now the thing about the third argument, because I want to be gentle and I also want to be plain.

You are not keeping it for the right moment. You have kept it for three years because keeping it is what lets you believe the thing is not settled and there is still a move available, and the written word never made the move yours, and the Holy Spirit has not been waiting on your timing.

Put it down. Not because it is a bad argument. Because a man with an argument in his hand is a man who cannot listen, and your son can smell it on you at twenty two minutes past one every single Sunday.

The breakthrough

So next Sunday you cook, and you put the third argument down.

Not forever. Nothing is being surrendered. If he asks you a real question one day, you may answer it, and it will be worth more coming from a man who has not been carrying it around a table for four years.

And when he sits down, before anything else, you ask him about his week. And you listen to the whole answer, including the parts about logistics that you do not follow, and you ask a second question about the first answer, which is the thing that tells a person you were actually listening. The written word calls that bearing, and the Holy Spirit does more with it than with any argument.

That is the whole of it.

The written word says love beareth and endureth, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in your son, so nothing about that young man's faith rests on whether you found the right moment between the roast and the pudding.

You are not running out of Sundays. You have been spending them on a moment that was never going to arrive, and there are a great many left, and they can all be like this one.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the kitchen with the plates still out. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in your son according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of whether you got through to him. Whether he comes round in a year or never says a word about it, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a verdict on the father who cooked the lunch.

  1. Sunday one o'clock, you are not a last chance and you do not have to carry everything. The Word of God says love beareth all things and endureth all things, and both of those are words about time, and there are a great many Sundays left.
  2. Third argument I have kept in my pocket for three years, get out of this kitchen, in the name of Jesus. Scripture puts the whole outcome in the hands of God, and the Spirit of God has been working in that lad in ways neither of us can see.
  3. Lord, You are the God who bears and endures with people for years without a resolution, and Your Spirit is in my son on a train tonight. I am cooking next Sunday and asking him about his week first, and I am not carrying anything to that table.
