Somebody Prayed For MeActs 10:4

Prayers From People I Never Met

This message is for to receive that people who died before you were born prayed for a house and a family you would later be born into

It is a ledger in a vestry and it should not have been interesting.

He went in about a boundary question, which is a long story involving a wall, and somebody put the old book in front of him and left him with it for an hour because the kettle was on and there was a thing happening in the hall.

It is mostly names and dates and money. There are two entries about a roof that made him laugh out loud on his own.

And on a page near the middle there is a note in a different hand, and it is a record of a family who covenanted together, in that parish, in a year he had to count on his fingers, to pray for the household and for their children and for their children's children.

He is a careful man and he checked. The surname is his mother's, in the older spelling, and the place is right, and the years line up in the way that makes a thing go quiet in a room.

He sat there with the gloves on for a while.

And then, driving home, he began to argue with himself, and he has been arguing since.

Because what is he supposed to do with it? People he never met, in a century he was not alive in, said something in a room he has never stood in about descendants they could not picture. That is either enormous or it is nothing, and he has not been able to work out which, and the not knowing has stopped him telling anybody, including his mother, who would very much like to know.

Prayers From People I Never Met

Thy prayers are come up for a memorial

Sit down at the table with the ledger open, because there is a line in Acts that tells you what happens to a prayer after it is said, and it is not what most people assume.

A man is told something about his own praying, by a messenger, out loud.

Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.Acts 10:4

Come up for a memorial before God.

A memorial is a thing that is kept. It is not a thing that is spent, or heard once and filed, or that fades according to how long ago it was said. The picture is of something rising and then remaining, before God, as a standing record.

And notice the timing in that chapter. What Cornelius is being told about is his praying, plural, over an unspecified period, and the thing that comes of it arrives on a completely different day, through a man in another town who has to be given a vision to make him come.

Hear this in the vestry. You are not holding a curiosity, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture describes prayers coming up for a memorial and remaining before God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept whatever was said in that room in that century, and He does not run an expiry on it.

Now let me deal with the argument you have been having in the car, because it has two sides and only one of them is real.

The first side says: this is enormous, everything in my life is downstream of that page, and I should be able to feel it.

The second says: this is nothing, people wrote pious things in ledgers, and reading anything into it is exactly the kind of sentiment I have spent my life avoiding.

Both of those are asking the same wrong question, which is what it does. Neither of them asks the only question that is actually answerable, which is what it is.

And what it is, is this: some people who share your blood said your family's future out loud in front of God, and what is written says that such things come up and remain.

That is not a mechanism, and it does not tell you which parts of your life it touched, and it is not a claim about anything that has happened to you. It is a fact about what was said and about what happens to what is said, and both halves are in the record: one in a ledger and one in Acts.

Hear this too, and let it stop the argument. You are not required to interpret it, and Scripture is what says so. What is written says prayers come up for a memorial before God, and the Spirit of God has kept every one of them, and a man does not have to work out the mechanism before he is allowed to be glad about it.

And now your mother, because she is the last line of this and you have not rung her.

You have been sitting on this for eleven days because you cannot decide what it means, and the written word never asked you to decide, and the Holy Spirit has kept the thing itself whether or not you can read it.

She will not need to decide, because the written word already decided it and the Holy Spirit already kept it. She will cry, probably, and say the name of somebody you have never heard of, and then tell you a story about a table.

You have been treating this as a problem in interpretation. The written word already settled what happens to a prayer, and the Holy Spirit has kept it. This is a piece of family news, three centuries old, and it is hers as much as yours.

The breakthrough

So today you say it out loud, once.

I was prayed for before I existed.

Not as a theory and not as a claim about your life. As a plain sentence about a thing that was said in a room in a century, which the written word says has come up and remained.

And then say thank you, out loud, because that is the only entirely appropriate response and it takes two seconds and it settles more of the argument in the car than a month of thinking has.

Then ring your mother.

The Holy Spirit is the one who has kept that page and the room it was written in and the words that were said there, and there is no clock running on any of it, and it does not need you to work out the mechanism before it is allowed to be true.

You are standing under a tree. Somebody planted it and never ate from it, and here you are with a bag.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the vestry with the ledger still open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept every prayer said in that room according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of what you can trace. Whether you ever see one effect of it or never see any, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a matter of what you can prove.

  1. Century I was not alive in, you are not empty ground and you were prayed over. The Word of God says thy prayers are come up for a memorial before God, and a memorial is a thing kept and not a thing spent, and there is no clock running on it.
  2. Argument in the car that has demanded I decide whether this is enormous or nothing, get out of this vestry, in the name of Jesus. Scripture answers what happens to a prayer and never once asks a man to work out the mechanism, and the Spirit of God has kept every word said in that room.
  3. Lord, You are the God before whom prayers come up and remain, and Your Spirit has held three centuries of them over a house I was born into. I am saying out loud today that I was prayed for before I existed, and then I am ringing my mother.
