The List That Never Seems To Move

Seven names, in the same order, since the second year.

He wrote them on a card once, properly, in pen, because he is a man who does things properly, and the card has been replaced twice and the order has never changed, and he could not now tell you why the order is the order.

Nine years.

Here is the honest accounting, and he has done it, because that is what he is like.

Of the seven: two are exactly where they were, and one of those he has not spoken to since. Two have got worse in ways that are not dramatic and are not reversing. One has changed a great deal but not in any direction he was asking about, and he has thought about that one a lot. One died in February, which he has left on the card, because taking it off felt like something he was not prepared to do on a Tuesday morning.

And one, the last one, has had something happen that he could not have engineered and did not expect. He is careful about that one. He does not build on it and he does not tell people about it, because he is not a man who reads meaning into data.

So: one out of seven, arguably, over nine years.

He sat down last Thursday with the card in front of him and thought, in a plain and unemotional way, that he might be running a ritual. That he might have been running one for a long time. And that a man who runs a ritual and calls it something else has a problem worth naming.

He prayed the list anyway. He has never once not.

Always to pray, and not to faint

Sit down at that desk, because Luke gives you an instruction and, unusually, tells you what it is for before he tells you what it is.

And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.Luke 18:1

To this end: that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.

Now read the two halves of that as one thing, because they are one thing. The purpose of the parable is not to explain how prayer produces outcomes. It is that men ought to keep praying and not give out.

The subject of that sentence is the person praying. Not the answer, not the timeline, not the mechanism. The man.

Hear this at your own desk. You are not running a ritual, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture aims that whole parable at the endurance of the one who prays, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept a card in front of a man for nine years and stopped him fainting, which is exactly what it says He is doing.

Now let me look at the accounting with you, because it is honest work and it is measuring what cannot be seen.

You have seven names and you can report on the visible surface of seven lives. That is the entire dataset available to you, it is a great deal thinner than it feels, and nothing written in Scripture ever put the accounting in your hands, and the Holy Spirit is working underneath all seven of them.

You do not know what did not happen. You do not know what was slower than it would have been, or what came apart later rather than sooner, or which of those two who got worse would have been somewhere else entirely.

You are auditing a system by looking at the outside of it, which you would never accept in any other part of your life.

Hear this too, and let it stand under Thursday. You have not wasted nine years, and Scripture is what says so. What is written puts the purpose of persistent prayer in the not fainting, and the Spirit of God has been at work in seven lives you can see the outside of, and no verse anywhere makes a visible result the receipt.

And now the name you left on the card, because that is the best thing in this whole story and you have been quietly slightly ashamed of it.

You could not take it off on a Tuesday morning. So it is still there, fourth, in the same order, nine years on, and you read it out with the others.

That is not sentiment and it is not confusion. That is a man who knows that a name said before God is not canceled by a funeral, and who has not stopped honoring a person he carried for years.
