He noticed it at the end rather than at the beginning, which is what made it unsettling.
He was standing at the window and he had finished, and he could not have told you whether he had been praying or whether he had simply run.
Not that his mind had wandered. That happens and he has made his peace with it years ago. This was different. His mind had not wandered anywhere. The words had come out in order, in his own voice, at his own pace, at the usual time, and something in him had been aimed at God throughout, or he thought it had, and standing there afterwards he could not find any evidence of the aiming.
He has been examining it since. He is a precise man and this is precisely the kind of thing that a precise man does badly.
Here is the question in the form it has settled into.
Is a prayer said out of habit a prayer? Or is it the shell of one, run by a body that has learned a shape, while the man who used to be inside it stands somewhere behind, not participating?
He has looked for a test and there is not one. He has tried, twice, to catch himself in the act of meaning it, and both times the attempt destroyed the thing it was looking for, which he now suspects is a structural feature and not an accident.
Last week he found himself deliberately pausing before a line, to insert intention, and heard how that sounded even in his own head, and stopped.
He has not missed a day. That is worth saying. Whatever this is, it has not stopped him doing it, which is either faithfulness or evidence for the prosecution and he genuinely does not know which.

In His law doth he meditate day and night
Sit down at the desk, because the very first psalm blesses a particular man, and the description of him is not a description of a series of sincere occasions.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night.Psalm 1:2
Day and night.
Now think about what that can and cannot mean. It cannot mean unbroken conscious attention, because no human being has ever done that and the man in the psalm has a life, and trees and rivers and chaff in the rest of it.
The word behind meditate is a low sound. A murmur, a mutter, the noise a person makes half under the breath, and it is the same word used elsewhere for the growl of an animal over its food. It is not a bright act of the will. It is a continuous low occupation, going on underneath a life, day and night, which by definition includes the hours when he is not attending to it.
Hear this at your own window. You are not running a shell, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture blesses a man for a murmur that goes on day and night rather than for a series of located intentions, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a word alive in a mouth that is no longer supervising it.
Now let me name the test you have been looking for, because you will not find it and there is a reason.
Intention is not a thing you can inspect while it is running, and nothing written in Scripture ever asked you to, and the Holy Spirit has never once made it the condition. The moment you look for it, you have created a second act, and the second act is the looking, and it is now the only thing you can see.
This is not a spiritual problem, and the written word never treated it as one, and the Holy Spirit does not. It is the ordinary structure of attention and it applies to walking down stairs, and to speaking your own language, and to loving anybody you have loved for thirty years.
You have never once been able to catch yourself meaning it. What has changed is that you started looking.
Hear this too, and let it settle. You are not disqualified by not knowing, and Scripture is what says so. What is written blesses a continuous murmur rather than a verified state, and the Spirit of God is the one who carries a word out of a man, and He has never once required the man to certify his own interior before He would carry it.
And now the deliberate pause before the line, because that is the moment I want you to keep.
You inserted a gap in order to put intention into it, and you heard how it sounded, and you stopped. That was right, and I want to tell you why it was right, because you stopped on instinct.
A pause inserted to produce sincerity is a performance with an audience of one, and you are the audience, and neither the written word nor the Holy Spirit is in the transaction anywhere. What you did in that moment was try to satisfy yourself, and the fact that you could not bear it is the healthiest thing in this whole story.
You have not missed a day. Hold that. Not as evidence, because you cannot build a case either way, but as a plain fact that a man kept saying the written words to God, every day, through a season when he could not locate himself in it, and the Holy Spirit carried every one of them.
That is not the shell of a prayer. That is what fidelity looks like from inside, and it never looks like anything.
So tomorrow you say them at the usual time, and you do not look.
That is the discipline and it is the opposite of everything a precise man reaches for. No test. No inserted pause. No checking at the end to see whether it counted.
Say them the way you have said them, at the window, at the same hour, and then stop and go and do the next thing without an assessment.
If you notice yourself checking, and you will, do not fight it. Just say the next line. The written word blesses a murmur that goes on day and night, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, and neither of them has ever asked a man to produce a receipt.
The question you have been asking has no answer available from where you are standing, and it does not need one, because it turns out not to be the question that matters. The words are true. God hears. A man who has not missed a day is a man who has not missed a day.
That is the whole of what can be known, and it is a great deal more than most people have.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the window with the words just finished. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a word out of a man according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of a verified interior. Whether this season clarifies next month or stays exactly as opaque as it is, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a report on the man at the window.
- Habit, you are not the opposite of prayer and you do not disqualify a word. The Word of God blesses the man who meditates day and night, and that is a low murmur under a whole life and not a series of located intentions.
- Test I have been trying to run on my own interior, get off this desk, in the name of Jesus. Scripture never asked anybody to certify himself before God would carry a word, and the Spirit of God has been carrying mine every day I could not find the aiming.
- Lord, You are the God who hears a murmur that goes on day and night, and Your Spirit has kept these words in my mouth through a season with no evidence in it. I am saying them tomorrow at the window and walking away without an assessment.
