She has left every gathering early for about six years and she leaves by the side door because it is nearer the coats.
She is not sneaking. She has thought about that word a great deal and it is not fair and she still uses it in her head.
There is a point, and she knows it now to within about five minutes, where her body stops being available. It is not boredom and it is not the people. It is a hard ceiling and a room of voices and about ninety minutes, and after that everything costs about four times what it cost at the start, and she pays it for a day and a half afterwards.
So she goes.
And what she misses, every single time, is the end.
That is where things get said. The thank you at the close. The bit where whoever is running it stands up and says something warm about the evening. The prayer at the finish, which is short and which she has heard maybe twice in six years.
She gets the middle. She never gets the landing.
And what has built up over six years is not resentment, it is something flatter: a sense that she is somebody who takes from rooms and does not stay for the part where anything is given, and that every gathering ends for her in a corridor with a coat over her arm.
Last month she stayed to the end of one. She paid for it for two days and it did not feel like the thing she had been missing anyway.

Peace I leave with you. He said it before the end of the evening.
Sit down in the doorway for a minute, because there is a line in John that is exactly a closing blessing, and the striking thing about it is when He says it.
It is the upper room. It is the long evening, and there is a great deal still to come in that chapter and the three after it.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.John 14:27
Peace I leave with you.
That is the language of a departure blessing. It is what you say at a door. And He says it in the middle of a night that is nowhere near finished, to people who are about to fail him and scatter and be nowhere near the end of anything.
He does not hold it until the close. He hands it over while the room is still going.
Hear this in the doorway with your coat. You are not missing the thing, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture puts the peace into people's hands in the middle of an evening rather than at the door of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, and He is not standing at the end of a hall waiting to distribute something at half past nine.
Now let me name what six years has actually built, because it is not resentment and you were right about that.
It is a small persistent account in which you are a taker. You arrive, you receive, and then you go before the giving, and nobody in any of those rooms thinks that for a second, nothing written in Scripture thinks it, the Holy Spirit does not think it, and you have thought it about four hundred times.
That account is not true, and it is worth saying why rather than just denying it. Everything you have brought into those rooms was brought in the first ninety minutes, which is the part you are present for, and the ninety minutes cost you more than the whole evening costs most people in there.
Hear this too, and let it change the corridor. You are not stealing out, and Scripture is what says so. What is written has peace handed over mid evening as a gift rather than collected at a door, and the Spirit of God is not administering a blessing at a specific hour, and He goes out through the side door with the woman who has to leave.
And now the thing about last month, because you tried it and it deserves an answer.
You stayed to the end and it cost two days and it was not the thing.
That is exactly right, and it is the most useful information in this whole article. What you have been missing is not located at the end of the room, and the written word never put it there, and the Holy Spirit does not keep it in a hall. If it were, staying would have got it, and staying got you two days of paying and a closing you barely registered because you were past your ceiling.
What is missing is a sentence. Not that specific sentence, in that specific hall, at that hour. A sentence, said over a person as she goes.
And that is portable, and it does not require the room, and you can have it in a doorway with a coat over your arm.
So tonight, at the point where your body says go, you go.
Do not stay. Nothing in this is asking you to stay, and last month proved that staying is not where the thing is kept, and paying two days for a closing you cannot receive helps nobody.
But before you go through the side door, you stop, for four seconds, in the doorway.
Coat on. Hand on the frame. Four seconds, which is nothing, and which you can afford even at the ceiling.
And you say the line to yourself: His peace He leaves with me. His peace He gives to me.
That is your closing. It is the same closing as the one in the hall, it is older, and the written word has it handed over mid evening to people who were about to leave badly.
The Holy Spirit is the one who carries it out of that door with you, and there is no version of Him that stays behind for the last ten minutes.
You are not somebody who takes from rooms. You are somebody who leaves under what is written, four seconds before the coats.
Declare this over yourself
Say these in the doorway with your coat on. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit goes out of that door with you according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of staying to the end. Whether the next gathering costs you a day or costs you nothing, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of the woman who had to go.
- Side door, you are not a way of stealing out and I am not leaving empty. The Word of God says peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you, and He said it in the middle of an evening that was nowhere near finished.
- Account that has made me a taker from rooms for six years, get off this coat, in the name of Jesus. Scripture hands the peace over as a gift rather than distributing it at a door, and the Spirit of God is not administering anything at half past nine.
- Lord, You leave Your peace with me and You gave it before the end of the night, and Your Spirit comes out through the side door with me. I am standing in the doorway for four seconds tonight and saying it, and then I am going home under it.
