The Only Words I Had Were A Song

This message is for to pray with borrowed words without feeling like a fraud, when the only sentence that will come is a line from a song somebody else wrote

The shift ends at ten and she sits in the car for eleven minutes before she starts it.

This is not a plan. It is just what happens now. She turns the key enough for the dashboard to come up, does not turn it enough for the engine, and sits in the blue glow with the shop sign still burning behind her and one trolley rolling slowly across the empty bays.

She wants to pray. She has wanted to pray for about nine days.

So she tries. God. And she waits for the second word the way you wait for a name you know perfectly well, and it does not come, and the eleven minutes are mostly that: the waiting, and then the small embarrassment of the waiting, and then a decision to try again tomorrow when she is less tired, which she has made every night for nine nights.

Here is what is actually in her head, and has been since about half past seven.

Four bars of a chorus. Not even the whole thing. The turn near the end where the line lifts, the one they play in the shop on the rotation and she has heard maybe four hundred times and stopped hearing about two hundred ago. It has been going round since she was on the tills. It is going round now.

And every time it comes round she pushes it away, because she is trying to pray, and a song stuck in your head is the opposite of praying. It is noise. It is the shop. It is somebody else's line, written by a person she has never met, sung by a voice that is not hers, and it turns up uninvited while she is trying to produce something real.

At minute nine she gives up on the sentence and lets the four bars come.

And she is crying before the end of them, in a car park, with her name badge still on.

Which she finds humiliating, because she did not even manage a prayer. She just had a song in her head, like anyone.

The Only Words I Had Were A Song

The church has always prayed in other people's songs

I want to tell you what was happening in that car, because you have been in it. Not my reading of it. What the written word says was happening, with the Holy Spirit named in the middle of it.

Not a failure to pray. A prayer, in the only shape it could take that night, arriving in the only words that were already in her.

Here is the sentence that settles it, and notice that it is an instruction and not a concession.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.Colossians 3:16

Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. That is a list of things somebody else wrote down first. Paul is telling a whole church that the way the word of Christ moves into a person and stays there is through sung lines they did not compose, carried into the heart until they come up on their own.

So when a chorus comes up on its own, that is not interference with the process. That is the process, running exactly as it was designed.

And hear this while you are still sitting in the car. You are not a fraud for praying in a line you did not write. The Word of God itself hands you the psalms and the hymns and the songs and says let them dwell in you richly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that four bar turn in your mouth at half past seven and kept it there until you were sitting still enough to hear what you were singing. You did not manufacture that. He carried it.

Think about how much of Scripture is like this.

The psalms are somebody's songs. A hundred and fifty of them, with tunes we lost, headed with performance notes for a choir director, and the church has prayed them in every century since without one person suggesting that borrowing David's grief made their own grief fake. When Jesus was dying He said one out loud. My God, my God. He was quoting. At the worst moment in the history of the world the Son of God prayed a line that had been written centuries before by somebody else, and nobody has ever called that second hand.

Mary opened her mouth when the news came and out came Hannah's song, reworked. Not because she was unoriginal. Because it was in her.

Now here is the thing that has been quietly bruising you, and I want to name it so it stops.

You have believed that the test of a real prayer is whether it originated with you. Nothing written in Scripture says that, and the Spirit who breathed it has never once graded a prayer that way. That the fresh sentence counts and the remembered one does not. And under that rule, every dry night is a failed exam, and nine of them in a row is a verdict.

That rule is not in the Book. Nobody put it there. Take it off.

What you have is not nothing. You have the word of Christ dwelling in you richly, exactly as it was promised, and it surfaced tonight without you organizing it, which is what dwelling means. That is His Spirit doing His own work in you, and it does not become less His because you can hum it.

And the tears. Let us be accurate about those, because you filed them under embarrassment.

You did not cry because the production was good. You cried because a true thing was said in your hearing and you agreed with it in the only place agreement happens. The song was borrowed. The agreement was yours. That is what the writer of that chorus was for: they were writing a line for a woman in a car park nine years later who would have nothing else, and heaven has never once been troubled by the handwriting on the page it is read from.

You are being sung over right now, as you read this, and it is not sentiment. Scripture says the Lord your God rejoices over you with singing, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is the one who has been playing four bars in your head all evening. He was not interrupting your prayer. He was starting it.

The breakthrough

So tonight we stop waiting for a sentence to arrive from nowhere.

You have not been failing to pray for nine days. You have been praying in four bars and refusing to count it, and I am counting it now, out loud, on the authority of a Scripture that put songs in the list on purpose and the Spirit who has been holding the tune in you since half past seven.

The line in your head is not in the way. It is the road.

Say it. Not sung, not performed, just said, the way you would say anything true to somebody in the passenger seat. The word of Christ is already dwelling in you richly. Open your mouth and let it out where you can hear it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are sitting, with the engine off. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the word of Christ already dwells in you richly by the Holy Spirit, so the standing you speak from tonight was never built out of your own vocabulary. Whether the next nine days come easy or come exactly as dry as these did, the outcome is His to decide and it is never a report card on how well you worded it.

  1. Eleven minutes of silence, you are not evidence against me. The Word of God tells the church to let psalms and hymns and songs dwell in it richly, so the four bars that came up while you were empty were the word of Christ arriving, and I am counting what heaven counted.
  2. Fraud, you have no seat in this car and you are not naming this hour, in the name of Jesus. I did not write the line and I meant every syllable of it, and a borrowed sentence carried the Son of God on the worst afternoon there has ever been.
  3. Lord, You rejoice over me with singing and Your Spirit started this one at half past seven. I am saying the line out loud tonight, plainly, in my own flat voice, and the words are Yours and the agreement is mine.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
