Forty one years on that lane and she has taken something to a door in nearly every one of them.
She is not sentimental about it and she would be irritated by anybody who called it ministry. It is soup, and a loaf, and a lift to an appointment, and a lasagne on the day of a funeral, and a bag of runner beans in August when the beans get out of hand.
She knows how it works. You leave it, you do not stay, and you do not go back for the dish for at least a fortnight, because going back for the dish makes it a transaction.
In March she came off a step ladder in her own kitchen and broke her wrist in two places.
Everybody knew by Tuesday. Of course they did.
On the Wednesday, Marian from the bungalow at the end left a pot on her front step with a tea towel over it and a note that said, do not ring me about the dish.
She looked at that pot through the glass for two hours.
That is the part she has not told anybody. Two hours, with a broken wrist, hungry, looking at a pot of soup on her own front step, and the thing keeping her in the hall was not manners and it was not pride exactly, and it took her most of those two hours to get near the shape of it.
It was that she did not know who she was on that side of the step.
She brought it in eventually because it was going cold and there is a limit even to this. She ate two bowls. It was very good soup, and Marian is not, by any measure, a good cook, which somehow made it worse.
She rang the following morning to say thank you and heard herself, without any decision at all, offering to take Marian to her appointment on the fourteenth.

Bear ye one another, and the one another goes both ways
Sit down at that table, because there is a short instruction in Galatians that has a word in it people skip over, and the word is the whole thing.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2
One another.
It is a reciprocal word. It cannot be done in one direction. A room where one person bears and everybody else is borne is not fulfilling anything, it is a woman with a wheelbarrow and forty spectators.
Hear this at your own table. You are not being asked to become a lesser woman, and the written word is what settles it, not flattery. Scripture makes the bearing mutual, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moved Marian to boil a pot on a Wednesday, and refusing the pot was not humility, it was declining a thing He was doing.
Now let me name what those two hours were really about, because you got close to it in the hall and then the soup went cold.
For forty one years you have been the one who arrives. That is not vanity. It is a role, and it is a good one, the written word honors it, the Holy Spirit has been in every dish you carried, and it has held that lane together in ways nobody has ever thanked you for properly.
But a role is a place to stand, and you have only ever stood on one side of the step, and when the pot came the other way you did not know who you were, because you have never been that person in the whole of your adult life, and the Holy Spirit was in that pot as surely as in every one you carried out.
That is not a moral failure. That is a hinge that has never been oiled because the door has only ever opened one way.
Hear this too, and let it settle. You are not diminished by a bowl of soup, and Scripture is what says so. What is written puts the whole church under a mutual obligation, and the Spirit of God is not less present in the hands that receive than in the hands that carry, and the law of Christ was fulfilled at that table on Wednesday night in a way it was not fulfilled by any of the forty one years of one way traffic.
And now the phone call, because that is where it went wrong and it is worth being precise.
You rang to say thank you and you ended up offering the fourteenth. That was not generosity. That was settling the account, quickly, before the debt could sit anywhere, and it took about eleven seconds and you did not decide to do it.
Marian will take the lift, and she will be glad of it, and something real will have been quietly canceled.
The old parish idea was never a system of favors balanced between households. It was a set of people who are simply given to each other, so that carrying and being carried are the same activity looked at from two ends, and nobody keeps the score because there is no score.
So this week, when somebody offers, you say yes.
And you say thank you, and then you stop talking. That is the discipline, and it is harder than the accepting: you do not offer anything back, you do not name a date, you do not find a way to be useful to them within the same conversation.
Let it stand unbalanced. Let there be, for once in forty one years, something in your house that came in and did not go out.
The written word does not describe a lane of households doing favors. It describes one body, and the Holy Spirit is in both ends of every burden that gets carried, and a woman who will only give has quietly excused herself from half of what she is part of.
Eat the soup. Say thank you. Ring off.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the kitchen table with the pot still there. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is in both ends of every burden according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of being the one who arrives. Whether this wrist mends quickly or slowly, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of how independent you managed to stay.
- Front step, you are not a place to leave a kindness standing. The Word of God says bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and one another goes both ways, so a pot coming up my path is the law of Christ arriving and not a debt being opened.
- Habit of settling the account inside eleven seconds, get out of this kitchen, in the name of Jesus. Scripture puts the whole church under a mutual obligation, and the Spirit of God is no less present in hands that receive than in hands that carry.
- Lord, You are the God who gives people to each other rather than lending them, and Your Spirit moved Marian to boil a pot on a Wednesday. I am saying yes and thank you this week and then stopping, and I am letting it stand unbalanced.
