He has said it every day. That is the strange part. He has not missed one.
Monday, when the phone call came, he said it at twenty past six in the evening the way he has said it at twenty past six for four years, standing at the same window, and he could hear himself doing it.
Tuesday he said it in a car in a hospital car park.
Wednesday he said it at his mother's kitchen table with people arriving downstairs, and Thursday and Friday he said it at his own window again with the same words in the same order at the same hour, and by Friday something had gone very wrong with it, and here is what it was.
He felt nothing.
Not sadness. He has plenty of sadness and it arrives without an appointment: in the queue at the garage, when he saw a coat, at four in the morning twice. But the prayer, which is where he assumed the sadness would be met by something, has been flat, level, dry, and utterly without event.
He says the words and the words come out and nothing whatever happens.
And on Saturday, halfway through, he stopped in the middle of a line and stood at the window and thought a thought he has not been able to shift since: what am I doing? If none of this is landing anywhere, what is the honest thing to call a man who goes on saying it? Is this not just recitation? Is a man who says words he does not feel not, strictly, telling a lie twice a day?
He finished the line. He always finishes.
But he has not been able to get out from under the question, and this evening at twenty past six he is standing at the window with the book in his hand, not opening it.

The man who got up before the dawn had no comfort either
Stand at the window. Do not open the book yet. There is a verse in the middle of the longest psalm that was written by somebody in your week.
I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in Thy word.Psalm 119:147
He got up before the light and cried out. That is a man in trouble, and there is no report anywhere in that psalm of the trouble lifting on the mornings when he did it.
Look at what he says he did instead of feeling something. I hoped in Thy word. Not I felt Thy nearness. He put his weight on a thing outside himself, at an hour, in the dark, without any evidence arriving, and that is the whole verse.
Hear this at the window. You are not a man telling a lie twice a day. The written word has its own author crying out before dawn on the strength of what is written rather than what he felt, and the Holy Spirit was carrying that man exactly as much on the mornings that produced nothing, and He has carried every word you have said since Monday.
Now the question about honesty, because you are a careful man and it deserves a careful answer rather than a reassurance.
You are assuming that a sentence is true only if the feeling matching it is present when it is said. Nothing written in Scripture makes that the test, and the Holy Spirit has never applied it. Test it yourself. On Thursday you said the words that call God faithful. Was He faithful on Thursday? Yes or no, independent of your chest.
Then the sentence was true when you said it. It was true in a dry mouth at twenty past six by a window, and your flatness had no bearing on its truth whatsoever, because it is not a report on your interior. It is a statement about God.
That is the difference between a liar and a witness. A liar says what is not so. A witness says what is so, whether or not saying it moves him.
Hear this too, and let it stand up under the week. You have not been reciting into an empty room, and Scripture is what settles it, not my sympathy. What is written says His word does not return empty, and the Spirit of God is not withdrawn from a grieving man, so five days of flat obedience at a window are five days of something real happening that you were not built to detect from inside it.
And now let me say the thing that I think is actually going on, because it is the kindest true thing available.
You are in the first week. In the first week the whole apparatus goes numb, all of it, including the part that feels God, and the written word calls that dust rather than sin, and the Holy Spirit treats it as a mercy and never as a judgement. A body that felt the full weight of Monday all at once could not have driven to the hospital on Tuesday.
What you have been doing, without knowing it, is exactly what the old rhythm was built for, and the written word set it there. It was not built for good weeks. Anybody can pray in a good week, and the Holy Spirit is not more present in one. It was built so that a man in the worst week of his life would have somewhere to stand at twenty past six that did not require him to generate anything, and it has worked, and the proof is that you have not missed a day.
You have not been performing. You have been holding on to a rail in the dark, the written word bolted it there, the Spirit of God has held the other end of it, and it has held.
So tonight you open the book.
Not because you have located the feeling. Not because the week has turned. Because it is twenty past six, the written word is the rail, the Holy Spirit is the one holding it, and you are going to put your hand on it again.
And you are going to say the whole thing without stopping to check whether you meant it. That is the discipline this week: no checking. Do not test the line as it leaves your mouth. Say it, and let it be true because it is true, and let your chest catch up in its own time, which may be a month.
The prayer is not a machine you have been operating. It is the written word bolted to the wall of the dark for men in exactly your week, the Holy Spirit carries every syllable of it, and it does not stop being a rail because your hand has gone numb.
Open it. Say it. Close it. Go and sit down.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing at the window with the book still in your hand. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is not withdrawn from a grieving man according to the written word, so the standing you speak from tonight was never built out of what you can feel. Whether the numbness lifts in a fortnight or holds for a year, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of the man at the window.
- Mechanical week, you are not a lie and you do not get to be called hypocrisy. The Word of God says I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in Thy word, so the man who wrote it stood on what was written and not on what he felt, and so do I.
- Accusation that a dry mouth makes a false witness, get out, in the name of Jesus. Scripture says His word does not return empty, and a sentence about God is true when I say it whether or not it moves me, and the Spirit of God has carried every flat word since Monday.
- Lord, You are the God who is faithful on the days I cannot feel a thing, and Your Spirit has been holding this rail while my hands went numb. I am opening the book at twenty past six tonight and saying all of it, and I am not stopping to check.
