Twice, On TimePsalm 103:14

The Hour Does Not Need You To Be Well

This message is for to keep a fixed hour of prayer when your energy is unpredictable and you have already collapsed two rhythms this year

She has started twice this year and she is not going to start a third time.

The first was in January and it was beautiful. A notebook, a plan, a time, a printed card with the days on it so she could tick them. Eleven days. Then a week where she could not get out of bed properly, and by the time she surfaced the card had eleven ticks and four blanks and the blanks were the only thing on it she could see.

The second was in April and she was cleverer about it. No card. No ticking. Just the time, and a promise to herself to be gentle about it.

She got nine days. Then a bad fortnight, and when she came out the other side she found she could not go back to it, because going back would mean looking at the fortnight.

It is now the middle of the year and she has a low, flat certainty that she is not a person who can hold a rhythm. She has evidence. Twice.

What she has not said to anybody, because it would sound like self pity and she would rather die, is that both times what actually broke it was not the missing. It was what she felt coming back.

Not guilt exactly. Something worse and quieter. The sense of arriving somewhere she had let down, and having to explain herself before anything else could happen.

So there is no third attempt. There is just a woman who prays sometimes, in an unstructured way, and who has quietly filed the whole idea of a daily hour under things other people can do.

The Hour Does Not Need You To Be Well

He knows what we are made of and has never forgotten it

Sit down with the blanket. There is a verse I want to put in your hands and it is a strange one to be comforting, but it has held more tired people than almost anything else in the Bible.

For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.Psalm 103:14

He knows our frame. Not He tolerates it. Knows it.

And He remembers, which is a startling word to use about God, because it means the fact of what you are made of is not something He has to be reminded of when you turn up in a bad fortnight. It is standing information. He has never once been surprised by your body.

Hear this in the armchair. You are not a person who cannot hold a rhythm. The written word says He knows the frame and remembers the dust, and the Holy Spirit has been present through both of those collapsed attempts without one flicker of disappointment, because nothing about your capacity was ever news to Him.

Now let me name the thing that actually broke it, because you were right about it and you have never said it out loud.

It was not the missing. It was the coming back. It was walking toward a thing that had a record of your absence in it, and having to be somebody who explains.

That is what the notebook did. The notebook meant that returning was an audit. And an audit at the door of a prayer is enough to keep a tired person out of a room for a year.

So we are going to build the hour without a door that audits.

Here is how the old rhythm actually worked, and it is not what people assume. It was never a streak. The office is not a chain of days that breaks when you drop one. It is a bell that rings whether or not anybody comes, and it rings again tomorrow, and the whole design of it assumes that on any given day half the parish is ill, or lambing, or away, or simply cannot.

There is no ticking. There never was. Somebody added the ticking.

Hear this too, and let it take some weight. You have not let anything down, and Scripture is what settles that, not my kindness. What is written says His mercies are new every morning, which means the ledger is not carried forward, and the Spirit of God is not standing at the door of tomorrow with a list of the days you missed in April.

And now the practical piece, because you need a version that a bad fortnight cannot break.

Make it a thing you can do at your worst. Not your average. Your worst. If your worst day is lying down with the curtains shut and no capacity for reading, then the hour has to be sayable lying down with the curtains shut.

One sentence. Said out loud or whispered or thought if speaking is beyond you. That is the whole office on the bad days, and on the good days it can be longer, and neither version is the real one.

An hour that assumes you are well is not an hour, it is an exam. The church built the other kind, on purpose, for a parish full of people with bodies, because the written word says He knows the frame and the Holy Spirit has never asked a body for more than it has.

The breakthrough

So there is a third attempt, and it is not like the other two.

There is no notebook. There is no card, nothing to tick, no streak to protect, and nothing anywhere that records what happened yesterday. Take a photograph of the notebook if you want to keep the memory, and then put the notebook in the bin, because it is the audit desk and it has been running your prayer life for six months.

Pick a time that already happens. The kettle. The tablets. The moment the light goes on.

And the whole thing is one sentence, sayable from a bed with the curtains shut.

Then when a fortnight goes past and you have said nothing, you do not come back and explain. You just say the sentence at the time, and there is no door, because we did not build one. The written word carries no ledger forward and the Holy Spirit is not holding one either.

The bell rings tomorrow whether or not anybody came today. That is not a lowering of the standard. That is what the standard always was.

Declare this over yourself

Say these from the chair or from the bed, at your hour. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is not withdrawn from anybody according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of your energy. Whether this holds for the rest of the year or breaks again in a fortnight, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of what a tired body managed.

  1. Missed week, you are not a broken rhythm and you do not get to close this door. The Word of God says He knoweth our frame and remembereth that we are dust, so my capacity has never once been news to Him, and the bell rings again tomorrow.
  2. Fear of coming back to a place I have let down, get out of this room, in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the mercies are new every morning, so there is no ledger carried forward, and the Spirit of God was present through both of those collapsed attempts without one flicker of disappointment.
  3. Lord, You are the God who remembers what I am made of, and Your Spirit has never stood at tomorrow's door with a list. I am saying one sentence at my hour today from exactly where I am, and there is no notebook this time.
